Call for Papers, Panels and Workshops
Two years ago we kicked off the first Triggering Change Hip Hop and Social Justice conference hosted by the TRGGR Media Group. At that conference we assembled over 300 guests, representing over fifty high school, college, and community organizations, to discuss the role of Hip Hop in the media justice movement. Yet, we were also concerned about the way Hip Hop has reshaped our communities and the critical role of youth activists in shaping the world in our image. Over 30 featured guests including Rosa Clemente, Jared Ball, Toni Blackman, Rebel Diaz, and KET, along with graduate and undergraduate students and community members, shared their work and perspectives, representing a variety of Hip Hop initiatives that engage social justice. The 2008 conference exceeded our expectations. Here’s just a small sample of some of the feedback from attendees:

With a new year underway, it’s time to get back to work. The Triggering Change conference brings together community educators, students, writers, activists, and scholars of diverse backgrounds and experiences to initiate conversations about Hip Hop’s potency as a critical force in dialogues concerning social justice nationally and internationally. A daylong series of panels and workshops that engage a variety of political, social, and cultural issues culminates with a performance with featured artists, including emcees, deejays, b-boys and b-girls, and poets. Confirmed guests for this year’s conference include: Dr. David Stovall, DJ Roddy Rod, Kev Brown, Invincible, Finale, and many others.
We are currently accepting proposals for papers, panels, workshops, art exhibitions, poster displays and installations from individuals and groups for participation in the upcoming Triggering Change II conference presented and sponsored by the TRGGR Media Group, the Hip Hop Collective at Hampshire College, Community Partnerships for Social Change, and Food For Thought Books. This year’s conference theme is “Hip Hop, Community Engagement and Sites of Empowerment.” Along with your name, institutional/organizational affiliation, contact information and presentation title, please send a 150-400 word abstract for a panel (one for the panel subject and one for each panelist), and/or workshop (details below), individual paper, or poster presentation by March 1st 2010 to: triggeringchange2010@gmail.com.
You will be notified of your acceptance by March 10th. Please indicate any A/V equipment needs. Individual paper presentations should be no longer than 20 minutes per panelist and workshops should not exceed an hour and fifteen minutes. Email us any questions you may have.
This year’s conference seeks to build on the energy we created two years ago with special focus on several areas critical to our development and prosperity as a global community including such themes as youth empowerment, the Israel-Palestine conflict, grassroots educational efforts, and much more. These panels and workshops will be facilitated by some of the best and brightest minds we could attract. We hope that you will join us on this journey in communion with the vision of social change that we believe is embedded and thrives within Hip Hop.

Submitting a Workshop? Here are some things to consider:
We invite folks to submit workshop proposals on topics related to Hip Hop, Community Empowerment and Sites of Empowerment. Workshops maybe offered by youth, adults, youth-adult collaborations. Some workshops may be attended by only youth and/or adults. It is up to the workshop facilitators. Please plan your workshop to fill 1 hour and 15 minutes and we recommend that all workshops be CREATIVE and INTERACTIVE.
Please include the following in your Workshop proposal:
Title of proposed workshop and a brief description/summary of the workshop. (Be sure to sound appealing! This is what will be in the program.) Please give a brief overview for the workshop including areas to be covered, techniques used, etc. Please describe the goals of this workshop. Is this a youth only workshop? Any other information you want the planning committee to consider.
Tabling
There will also be tabling by various organizations. You may, in addition to or instead of presenting a workshop, set up a table with information about your organization or community resources that conference participants will be able to browse through throughout the conference. Please contact us for more information, if you are interested in tabling.
Deadlines
Proposals should be received by March 1, 2010. As we are on a tight timeline, proposals received after this deadline may not be considered.
